Who are Bands for Hire?
Bands for Hire is a live music agency providing high quality bands and artists for weddings and events across the UK.
How did Bands for Hire start and how long has the business been going?
Having spent over 10 years performing in a wedding band and also working as a freelance web developer in the week, starting a live music agency seemed like the obvious next step.
Having started out as a bedroom business six years ago, the company has gone from strength to strength and we’re now a team of four, booking thousands of events each year.
Which areas of the UK do you cover?
We’re based in Stamford but our bands and acts are based all over England and Wales. Earlier in the year we expanded into the North of England and over the next year we’ll be working with and developing bands across Scotland as well.
What type of music acts do you provide for weddings?
Our current roster includes everything from pop, rock and soul bands to 1920s speakeasy, string quartets and everything in between. We try to be as diverse as possible and are always looking for something new, whether that be a unique world music act or an up and coming indie band. Our main focus is on quality, so if a band has got the talent, there will always be a market for them.
Can couples choose a set list and/or request that a band learns a particular song for their wedding?
Most of our bands will learn one new song per event, often for the first dance or ceremony. All of our bands have extensive repertoires so couples are always welcome to select some of their favourites before the big day, having said that it’s also nice to leave bands with some freedom on the night as they have the experience to chop and change on the day to ensure a full dance floor – which is usually the most important thing.
What would you say makes a great wedding band?
There are so many important factors that go into making a great band. It goes without saying that lead vocals and musicianship are vital, but on top of that there’s also showmanship and the ability to connect with the audience.
Whilst we do the majority of the organising our end, the band leader will ultimately be the person in charge on the day, so being organised will play a large part in how successful a wedding band becomes.
How long in advance should couples book a band for their wedding?
My advice would be about 12 months in advance, as it will mean that the majority of bands will be available and willing to quote for your wedding date. We do of course take bookings further in advance, but as a general rule I don’t advise any sooner than that.
Leaving it until the last minute can get you a bargain, but with summer dates so high in demand you may be left with fewer choices.
What sets Bands for Hire apart from other music and entertainment agencies?
Whereas some agencies tend to add hundreds of acts at different levels, we’re very particular about who we work with, especially when it comes to vocals. We also put a huge amount of effort into providing a fast and efficient service.
What are your top tips for couples looking for a wedding band?
If you haven’t seen many wedding bands live and you’re relying solely on a band’s online promotional material, my advice would be to book through an agency (Bands for Hire perhaps?!) to ensure a smooth booking process from start to finish.
Random question… What are the best and worst albums you’ve ever bought?
Mmm, there are too many to mention! I think Right Said Fred’s debut album might be one for the most embarrassing purchases ever – but then I was only 9 years old! Best album… perhaps Showbiz by Muse.
