“From the beginning we knew that we were not going to be having a very traditional wedding. We wanted our wedding to be a celebration, a party, a laid-back and creative day with no pressure.

“Our theme or starting point was our mutual love of music, which was reflected through our invites, our wedding decor and our playlist. Two of the most important factors for us were choosing the band and music for our ceremony, and we were so pleased with our band The Suite and our ceremony musician Doug Sheridan.

“We found a venue we loved and provisionally booked it two years before the wedding. However, we returned to the venue a year later and decided that we just could not afford it, so during a last minute search I found Mount Druid. We instantly fell in love with the place; it was us as a couple down to a tee – relaxed and creative, we could have our Humanist ceremony on site, it had a festival feel to it, tasty food, and wasn’t a huge space where you felt you had to have a huge amount of people to fill it for atmosphere – it was homely.

“My amazing, multi-talented mother in law, Marie, made every single floral arrangement. I love flowers but haven’t a clue about them other than their attractiveness, but I knew I didn’t want too many. Marie was a gem in this department; she knew what was in season, what colours to work with and how much was enough to have – I’d have been lost without her!

“I didn’t want a traditional wedding dress, leaning more towards Hollywood glamour with a nod to the 1940’s war bride. I love the hair, make-up and silhouettes of that era and I am a huge vintage lover and collector of all things retro and kitsch. I couldn’t find what I was looking for so I decided that I was going to design my own dress, and I sought the expertise of Elena Doru to take on board the construction. I bought the real silk and lining in London for £50 in total, and Elena tailor-made the dress to my body.

“We didn’t use a wedding car as it was only a short journey down the land to the chapel but our wedding vehicle was my dream come true, a bottle green 1960’s mod Vespa with black and white chequered seat. I always said I would love to arrive to my wedding on one and the dream came to fruition by the kindness of a person I met (Johnny) on the street in Ennis one day. I admired his set of wheels and told him my story, and he kindly loaned it to us for the wedding.

“We wanted our personalities to shine through in our decor. We both love a bit of fun and humour, often reverting back to childlike messing, so our table arrangements reflect this. We used a drawing my sister Niamh had created of a robot bride and groom for our menu cards, our place name cards were old school cassettes printed onto card with Dynamo strip name stickers, and these were stuck into children’s plastic toy animals that we had sprayed gold.

Wedding treat table

“We decided to have a help yourself treats table on the day, with old school favourites such as Rice Krispies Squares, chocolate dipped marshmallows and fruit, cake pops, peanut butter cups, pecan cookies, meringues and brownies. We were not going to have a wedding cake, but Marie made a sinful fresh cream and mixed berry naked sponge cake, and it really made the focal point on the table.

“Our wedding as a whole was a massive team effort and we could not have possibly done it without the help of our loving and supportive friends and family.”
